How Your Air Conditioner Removes Moisture
Cooling and dehumidifying are two jobs your AC does at the same time. Understanding the second one explains everything.
When the system runs, warm indoor air passes over a very cold evaporator coil. Water vapor in that air condenses on the coil, just like droplets forming on a cold glass of iced tea.
That condensed water then collects and drains out of your home through the condensate line. Every cooling cycle, your air conditioner is literally pulling moisture out of the air and sending it outside.
What Goes Wrong When the Fan Is Set to ON
On the AUTO setting, the fan runs only while the system is actively heating or cooling. On the ON setting, the fan runs continuously, around the clock, even after a cooling cycle ends.
That constant airflow is exactly the problem in a humid climate.
When the compressor shuts off but the fan keeps blowing, air moves across a coil that is still wet and beginning to warm back up. Instead of draining away, that moisture re-evaporates and gets pushed right back into your rooms. As the building-science resource Energy Vanguard explains, a continuously running blower increases this re-evaporation, undoing part of the dehumidification the system just performed.
The result is a home that never quite dries out, no matter how long the AC runs.
The Duct and Pressure Factor
There is a second issue that matters in a lot of Middle Tennessee buildings. Running the fan nonstop also changes the air pressure inside the structure.
When ductwork passes through hot, unconditioned spaces like attics or crawl spaces, continuous airflow can force warm, humid outside air in through duct leaks and gaps in the building envelope. The air conditioner then has to fight moisture it never should have let inside, and it can never quite catch up.
Why This Hits Harder in a Humid Climate

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency calls moisture control the key to mold control and recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50. Once indoor air stays damp for long stretches, surfaces and the materials behind them can begin to support growth.

The Simple Fix, and When You Need More
For most homes and offices in the region, the fix is refreshingly simple: set the thermostat fan to AUTO and leave it there through the cooling season.

If humidity stays high even on AUTO, something else is going on. The system may be oversized and short-cycling, the ducts may be leaking badly, or the building envelope may need attention. In those cases, a dedicated whole-home dehumidifier or targeted air sealing and weatherization can solve what the fan setting alone cannot.
